October, 2006: NEDRIX simulation focuses on Pandemic Preparedness

The New England Disaster Recovery Information Exchange (NEDRIX) held its annual conference and disaster simulation. The theme of this year's simulation was Pandemic Planning. Guy Sapirstein, a senior partner with Organizational Resilience International, LLC was one of the simulation planners and was also on the panel of experts speaking about the Human Impact of a potential pandemic on the workforce and organizational functioning.

The simulation was well attended and received excellent feedback from participants who reported that they learned a lot about the necessity of planning for people.

The simulation committee which is co chaired by Maelyn Arvedon of State Street Bank and Gail Coulter of Amiga Insurance designed an innovative simulation which engaged participants in the process of manufacturing a product (a Doohickey) as well as responding to injects that mirrored real life situations.

An important aspect of a pandemic flu scenario is that infrastructure is not directly affect but people are. This necessitates specific planning for people in addition to adapting IT or other types of technology.
